I am fully desi now, says Motilal Oswal after buying new Mahindra car

Motilal Oswal, the co-founder and CEO of Motilal Oswal Financial Services, has once again drawn attention on social media—not with a stock market prediction, but with his latest car purchase. In his recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Oswal revealed that he has bought a new Mahindra SUV, doubling down on his decision to move away from foreign luxury products.

“I’m fully Desi now—no more foreign luxuries! Proud to use mostly Indian products. As I mentioned earlier, my next favourite car Mahindra,” he wrote in the post.

This follows a similar announcement earlier last year, when Oswal said he had purchased a Tata Safari Dark Edition, a locally manufactured SUV, marking what he called a “philosophical shift” in his lifestyle. At that time, he had declared that he would no longer spend on foreign-branded cars, watches, or other luxury goods.

From Safari to Mahindra

Oswal’s decision to switch to Indian-made vehicles like Tata and Mahindra isn’t just about buying cars—it’s a broader reflection of his evolving mindset. He has been vocal about embracing simplicity and consciously choosing Indian brands over imported luxury products. The idea, he noted, is not just patriotism but also practicality—supporting quality local manufacturing while moving toward a minimalist lifestyle.

His tweets have sparked a range of reactions online. While many applauded the move, praising his commitment to Indian brands and the government’s “Vocal for Local” campaign, others questioned whether high-end models like Tata Safari and Mahindra SUVs—often priced upwards of Rs 25-30 lakh—truly reflect a minimalist approach.

Vocal for Local and Aatmanirbhar Bharat

Oswal’s endorsement aligns well with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push for “Vocal for Local” and the broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision. As someone from the financial world with a significant public following, his preference for Indian-made products carries weight.Auto companies have taken note too. Earlier last year, Tata Motors responded warmly when Oswal shared his Tata Safari experience, calling it a vote of confidence in Indian engineering and design. Mahindra is yet to respond publicly to the latest tweet, but the mention adds another feather in the cap for the company, which has steadily expanded its footprint in the premium SUV space.

Why It Matters

At a time when Indian automakers are trying to break into segments historically dominated by global players, endorsements from influential voices like Oswal help shift public perception. They also underline the fact that Indian consumers—especially those with purchasing power—are increasingly willing to bet on local brands that deliver both quality and status.

In Oswal’s case, it’s not just a lifestyle choice, it’s also a message.
